Centennial High School's culinary team won every judged category at Las Cruces Public Schools' third annual Grill and Thrill BBQ Competition.

The team, called Feathers and Flames, claimed the Grand Champion title after sweeping all four events: the Signature Drink Challenge, Dessert Showdown, Burger Battle and Ultimate Food Truck Item Challenge, LCPS announced. Six high school teams competed in the contest, subtitled Battle of the Bites, which took place Friday, Oct. 16, at the Teaching and Learning Center on South Main Street.

The competition also marked the public debut of the district's first student-run food truck. Centennial High junior Carlos Lozano designed the truck's exterior and came up with its name, "The District Dish," according to the district.

Lozano said he wanted the design to represent every LCPS high school. "I tried to keep with the colors for the district and added the logos for all of the high schools, because it's for everyone," he said in an LCPS profile published Oct. 1.

Lozano also participates in Best Buddies and Educators Rising at Centennial. He has marched with the school's marching band and hopes to become an educator, according to the district profile.

Sen. Carrie Hamblen attended the food truck unveiling before the competition began, according to LCPS.

The truck will support culinary arts and business entrepreneurship programs at every LCPS high school. Megan Romig, Centennial's culinary arts and professional baking teacher, said in the Oct. 1 profile that she gave students class time to submit designs and names for the truck. Lozano created his entry independently, Romig said.

In the Burger Battle, teams created gourmet burgers using beef, turkey, chicken or plant-based patties. Students seasoned and cooked on-site, incorporated a secret ingredient and aimed for a medium-well cook. Judges scored temperature, flavor balance, texture, creativity and presentation.

The Ultimate Food Truck Challenge gave teams 45 minutes to create an original street-food item inside the new truck and clean their workspaces. The Dessert Showdown required had to be free of peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish with strong visual presentation.

Las Cruces High School's team, Ruff N Smokey, won the People's Choice Award.
