Las Cruces police found two people dead inside a home Saturday, Oct. 24, in what they are calling an apparent murder-suicide.
Officers responded around 8:30 a.m. to a residence in the 4100 block of Calle Libertad, where they found Angelica Aguirre, 30, and her boyfriend, Shane Perez, 46, deceased, according to a Las Cruces Police Department news release issued Monday, Oct. 26, as reported by Organ Mountain News.
Investigators believe Perez shot Aguirre before taking his own life, police said.
The couple's five children, ranging in age from 3 to 14, were inside the home at the time of the shooting. The New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) helped place the children in the temporary custody of a relative, according to police.
The shooting occurred in a neighborhood off Elks Drive, KVIA reported. The Las Cruces Sun-News also covered the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing. No additional information was available as of Oct. 26, police said.
