Memorial Medical Center is putting nearly $10 million into three construction projects on its Las Cruces campus, with work set to begin in November and stretch into 2027.
The hospital announced the projects Monday, Oct. 26, according to Organ Mountain News. The spending covers a $5 million exterior renovation, more than $3 million in parking lot restoration and more than $1 million in Emergency Department upgrades.
The new round adds to more than $12.7 million Memorial had already invested in facilities, equipment and technology during 2026 as of Sept. 30, according to the hospital's investment page. Together, the hospital's 2026 capital spending exceeds $22 million.
"It reflects our commitment to listening to the people we serve and continuing to strengthen Memorial Medical Center for the future," interim CEO Caryn Iverson said in the announcement.
The investment comes seven months after the City of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit against the hospital. City Manager Ikani Taumaoepeau said at the time that officials were "specifically concerned about the lack of indigent care and the shortfall on capital improvements," KRWG reported in March. The federal case was voluntarily dismissed without prejudice on Aug. 26, 2026; the dismissal did not constitute a ruling on the merits of the allegations.
What's getting built
The largest piece is the $5 million exterior renovation. It will update building finishes, signage and directional information to help patients and visitors navigate the campus. That work is expected to start before the end of 2026 and continue through 2027.
More than $3 million will go toward parking lot restoration, including pavement milling, resurfacing and restriping of parking stalls, accessible spaces, fire lanes and pedestrian walkways. Parking work is scheduled to begin in November, with completion expected during the first quarter of 2027.
The Emergency Department project, budgeted at more than $1 million, will bring new flooring, paint, lighting, cabinetry and a redesigned nursing station. That work starts in January 2027. Completion is expected later that year.
Earlier 2026 investments
Memorial said the new projects build on upgrades already completed or underway this year. Those include a $3.5 million expansion of the cardiac catheterization lab, $2.5 million in campus-wide security camera and badge-access upgrades and $750,000 in sixth-floor renovations for the inpatient unit serving orthopedic and oncology patients.
State Sen. Crystal Brantley, R-District 35, called the spending "welcome news for southern New Mexico." State Rep. Rebecca Dow, R-District 38, also praised the investment.
What patients should expect
Memorial said construction will be phased to maintain access to hospital services. Patients and visitors should expect temporary changes to parking, entrances and pedestrian routes as work moves through different areas of the campus. The hospital plans to provide advance notices and bilingual signage.
Additional interior renovations beyond the three announced projects are planned, according to the hospital. Residents can view renderings and follow construction progress at mmclc.org/investment.
